June Update- Peoria Juvenile Detention Center Visit

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.-  Romans 8:28

“Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.”-  John Wooden

If you have been around The Saints Prison Ministry for at least a day, you quickly learn that one of the keys to prison ministry is FLEXIBILITY.  This past month we got to opportunity to be flexible.  We had another facility that we were supposed to play SOFTBALL and minister at and due to an incident they had to cancel.  We could not find another facility to host an event so we were looking at going two months between events.  We contacted the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center about playing BASKETBALL with the youth offenders at their facility.  We were able to schedule two games against two different units on a Saturday when we were supposed to be playing softball.

It is cool to know that God knew ahead of time that we would be ministering to kids on a basketball court instead of the men in the prisons.

Here are some specific things that you can pray about during our visit on Saturday:

  • Please pray for Missionary Athletes Jeremy Haab and Brent Gerber.
    • Jeremy will be sharing his story about how he came to know Jesus Christ as his Savior.
    • Brent will be preaching!  Please pray for wisdom and clarity and Brent delivers the Gospel.
  • Pray for the games!
    • Traditionally we handle the kids pretty well but pray that the games will be fun and engaging for the young men that are currently living there.
    • Pray for no injuries
  • Pray for the young men’s receptiveness to the Gospel
    • I have done this for close to three years now and it is way easier to share the Gospel and talk about spiritual matters with someone who is doing life in prison for doing a horrific crime than it is to talk to a young 15-17 year old kid about Christ.  They are often more hardened to the Gospel and convinced that their way of life with drugs, gangs, bad relationship choices are more important than getting things right with God.
    • Pray that we would see someone come to know Christ because of these two games!
  • Pray for the families who are at home while we are serving
    • This is the shortest trip we will make all year (the facility is literally 90 seconds away from house!) but we will be without cell phones or means of being contacted.  Pray that our families will be safe while we are ministering and playing basketball.
I will be posting the results of our visit next week!  Thank you for all of the prayer support!
